Biography and Tour
David S. “Dave” Koz (born March 27, 1963) is an American smooth jazz saxophonist.
Koz was born in Encino, California, to Jewish parents, Norma, a dental hygienist, and Harry Koz, a pharmacist. He graduated from William Howard Taft High School in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles. He studied business at the University of California in Los Angeles but dropped out after one year to pursue a career in music.
He began playing professionally at age 19, eventually working with Bobby Caldwell, Jonathan Butler, Jeffrey Osborne and Richard Marx. He also became musical director for Bette Midler and opening act for Natalie Cole. In 1990, he released his self-titled debut album, which went to No. 8 on Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz chart.
Koz was a founding member of the group Hiroshima in 1990 with Dan Kuramoto, June Kuramoto and Martin Pizzarelli. The band recorded the album East, which was nominated for a Grammy Award.
In 1993, Koz began hosting The Dave Koz Morning Show on 94.7 The Wave in Los Angeles. He hosted the show for three years before resigning in 1996 to focus on his musical career.
